Should I be concerned about the material used on the back of my frame, and what choices do I have?
All the elements that make up a picture frame play an important role.
Framed pictures can be damaged simply by contact with the walls behind them.
Damp (for example, from newly plastered walls) can transfer into the frame, mount, and artwork, making it moldy. Continuous exposure to air pollutants from everyday activities such as cooking and drying clothes indoors, are all contributing factors that damage framed artwork over time.
The backing board seals the back of a picture frame, helping to slow the impact of these damaging effects, but even the backing board itself can damage artwork over time.
Hardboard, plywood and MDF all contain acids that can transfer into your artwork and stain, discolor or corrode them.
They are useful when framing large artworks but are unpleasant to work with, create dust and pose health risks.
MDF is commonly used for mass-produced, ready-made frames.
So, what’s the best option I hear you ask?
Most backing board for picture frames is now made from cardboard, specially manufactured for the purpose of picture framing. Most incorporate a fluted corrugated core with a variety of PH-neutral, archival and or conservation-quality paper liners to reduce and slow environmental damage to the artwork.
Backing boards are available in different quality standards, and you should choose a conservation backing board when framing a valuable or delicate artwork.
To further preserve your artwork, check the frame two or three times a year.
Review the condition of the mount, artwork, glass, backing, sealing tape and hanging fixtures. Look for signs of discoloration, staining and mold. Check the tape sealing on the back is securely adhered.
If in doubt, take your picture to a professional framer for a full inspection.
